HORIZON SCANNING

In late 2024, we gathered some of the most inquisitive brains from across Hoare Lea to consider what the first quarter of the 21st century could mean for the next.

During face-to-face sessions over three months, people from teams as diverse as healthcare, AI, comms, tech, public sector, sustainability and professional development discussed several potential scenarios, using horizon scanning and foresight methods, that could play out if we don’t plan for them now – and what this could mean for the built environment by 2050.

This was all conducted against a backdrop of sustainability goals outlined by the various COPs from the last decade and a half, with a lens on the ‘what ifs’. What if rising temperatures take out a major capital centre? What if big tech takes over from government? What if the robots become so sentient that they take positions of power in government and business? Who knows what this future would be like?

Using existing population and societal data, we extrapolated four scenarios and rated their probability and preferability. Each scenario has its benefits but also highlights many flaws. On the pages that follow, we’ve built each scenario and created personas for the people who could be living through them.

Our expert team has also provided their thoughts on what we can do to either propagate the positives or negate the negatives from each scenario.

Of course, these are just our musings – we tried to explore various wild cards too, but the great thing about humanity is that one size doesn’t fit all, so with all of our presumptions, what’s not to say there’ll be a moment or a movement that unites us to achieve a brighter and more sustainable future? That’s what we hope for and, in our industry, there are several things we can do to help bring this about.

If you’re inspired to continue talking to us about the world in 2050 and how we can help you achieve the most positive future for generations to come, get in touch.

Horizon scanning: why?

To identify potential threats, risks, emerging issues and opportunities that may impact the future of the built environment. We then use this intelligence to explore different visions of the future.

These narratives are based on structured frameworks and evidence that help us anticipate how business decisions that we, and our clients, make in the short-term will influence longer term outcomes. This helps us to predict emerging trends and potential disruptors within our industry, inform our strategic thinking as a business, and spark conversations within our firm and beyond.
