USING AI TO DEVELOP TIME-SAVING SOLUTIONS AND DRIVE BETTER LIVING

Supporting the development of bright, comfortable residential buildings aligning with Net Zero Carbon goals.

WHAT? A machine learning tool that enables rapid evaluation of multiple performance metrics for façade design optioneering.

WHY? Kaleidoscope makes fast machine learning predictions to replace time-consuming simulations to support early-stage design decisions during façade development. Kaleidoscope makes it easy to evaluate a broad range of design strategies early in the process, so it’s great for optimisation in concept stages. Ideal for parametric studies, and currently calibrated for London, Manchester and Bristol.

LIGHTING: ASSET NOT AFTERTHOUGHT

Lighting should do more than meet minimum standards. It should enhance wellbeing, reduce carbon and create long-term value. That’s why we challenge the conventions of CAT A lighting, making data-led choices that cut waste and help us design with flexibility. Our people-focused, sustainable approach delivers spaces that are healthier, more adaptable and built for the future.

PRAGMATIC DECARBONISATION

The current political and financial landscape is making it difficult for developers to maintain their commitment to decarbonisation targets and reduce their adverse impact on the planet. We’re helping clients navigate this with an approach called pragmatic decarbonisation, making step changes on a decarb journey rather than trying to solve all problems at once.

BRINGING BIM TOGETHER

BIM (building information modelling) is more than creating 3D models; using this process can help us integrate vast amounts of data from a building’s form and function, and allows collaboration across practices, resulting in informed decisions. Our BIM community is comprised of BIM practitioners working as a unit across all teams, to help create a problem-solving, collaborative approach, no matter the brief.

Conversation kickstarter.

“Building a house is like producing a movie. There’s no right way to do it, but a lot of wrong ways. You have to be flexible and creative. You have to move fast, be prepared, or it quickly becomes costly.”

Jeremy Renner, AKA Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who has a sideline in building houses.

“I’m eternally optimistic about the future... If we are committed towards it and if we continue to educate people and get the whole world community to implement green features and aspects in not just the built environment, in not just their lifestyles, but in their businesses, in their industries, then we’re heading towards a green future.”

Architect, ecologist, planner and author Ken Yeang, known for ecological architecture and masterplans with a distinctive green aesthetic.

“Change for better: one-time or continuous, large or small.”

The human brain enjoys the familiar; it gives it a chance to switch off and ‘go through the motions’. Rather like an autopilot, it has been created to respond to the predictable, so that we can conserve energy, but the trouble with living our lives through standardisation and comfort is we miss opportunities to rethink challenges. Creativity comes from tension and embracing the unpredictable. We owe it to ourselves to override the autopilot every now and again.

The buildings of science

When it comes to science and research buildings, it’s the people who work in them who should define their design and system strategies. We’ve been reflecting on our work in the sector, particularly Liverpool’s Maghull Health Park, exploring how the right building design helped foster a sense of creativity and collaboration for a world-class science hub.

Drop to drain

Reinforced by the London Plan, several Greater London local authorities have introduced water neutrality targets for new and refurbished properties to reduce consumption by 35% minimum through recycling, reuse and approved credits. Nature England has also placed a moratorium on abstraction from chalk streams in the UK’s south east. We are working with clients using our ‘drop to drain’ approach to cover all aspects of the built environment.

The need for creative storytelling in the built environment

Our industry is more than building design. We’re creating the stage for our lives to play out on, from curtain-up to concluding acts; from the right school that will nurture a child’s imagination to a later-living complex that can support a level of fulfillment and independence for an elderly parent. Our work is not intangible, and we need to be able to communicate the benefits beyond great design and technical prowess. It’s more than winning hearts and minds; conveying what we do has significant commercial potential too. It’s about time we saw more brave, imaginative, human communication in our industry.
