Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol.
Balancing engineering sensitivity, technical solutions and unique architectural storytelling.

As someone who grew up in Bristol, it means a great deal to influence how the bridge will look and feel for the next 20 years.

While all the sketches, imagery, modelling, calculations and late-night lighting trials helped us visualise the outcome, seeing the bridge come to life for real was something else.

Cornice lighting frames the silhouette beautifully and emphasises the towers’ architectural definition in a way that wasn’t shown before

The client: Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust

The expertise: Lighting Design, Electrical

The challenge: To design lighting that Isambard Kingdom Brunel – mastermind of this Grade I Victorian structure – might have envisioned, had the technology existed in his day. To add a dynamic contemporary layer that can withstand extreme environmental conditions – constant vibration, movement, full exposure to the elements. It should enhance architectural presence while protecting the bridge’s historic fabric and its function as a fully operational transport route.
